PTA websites allow the members of Parent Teacher Associations connect with one another without having to arrange a meeting in person. Thanks to the worldwide web, people can now communicate from the comfort of their own homes or offices.
But as any PTA member can tell you, each individual school’s Parent Teacher Association can be very different from that of even a neighboring one. That’s why there is a wide variety of PTA websites online today, distinguished not only on account of their styling and design but also where functionality and user interfaces are concerned, too. This is only natural, as can be imagined, since every community will have its own needs that its PTA will try to address, with its website naturally reflecting such matters.
Commonalities do exist, however. Event management is surely the number one purpose of such sites, keeping the PTA on track with less effort, resulting in potential monetary savings. Managing people should also be something that PTA websites do successfully, as well as coordinating e-mail communications and, now, in this age of “Web 2.0,” social media on top of it all. Beyond this basic menu of functions, other features include shopping cart and payment processing, data reporting, and online auctions. Anything and everything is possible.
It all comes down to the programmer(s) hired or, increasingly the case nowadays, the particular software application used. Most off-the-shelf Content Management Systems can be customized to meet a wide variety of needs, but most PTAs are unlikely to have the technical expertise to do so themselves. Hiring a programmer, never mind two or three, is certain to be expensive, so using dedicated PTA software will probably prove the best approach in many cases. Using available software, instead of creating one’s own, also allows users and administrators to plug into a larger community of fellow users and admins for mutual support.
